More than a decade ago, Taryn was employed as a social worker, serving as a case manager for a nonprofit social services agency that helped those experiencing homelessness. Everything seemed to be working out just fine, but Taryn’s life soon turned upside down when her son faced a serious illness that led to 13 surgeries over the next nine years.
“I stopped working to take care of him,” Taryn recalls. “After that, I didn’t want to be a social worker anymore. It was too emotional.”
With financial demands still needing to be met, Taryn reevaluated her life and found new employment at Deseret Industries about two and a half years ago. This opportunity was particularly appealing for Taryn because she knew it would allow her to work in a positive atmosphere while becoming emotionally stable.
During her time at DI, Taryn has gained more than she could have imagined when she began. “It's a great environment,” she says. “My supervisor has been working with me on management skills and how to be a good lead and a good supervisor. I've learned to be more assertive instead of just staying quiet in the background.”
Taryn hopes that her experience and the lessons she is learning as a DI associate will ultimately allow her to become financially independent. Her goal after DI is to go to school for grant writing.
Through all of her challenges, Taryn has chosen to be positive and proactive. “When it rains it pours,” she says. “But I’ll pick myself back up.”
