Donations

How do I donate items to Deseret Industries? 

To donate items to Deseret Industries, please visit one of our locations during donation hours. No appointment is needed—simply follow the signage to the donation drive-thru. Our employees will be happy to help by directing you and unloading your items.

Can I donate to Deseret Industries if I am not located near a DI store? 

Donations are only accepted at DI locations—Deseret Industries does not offer donation pickups. If there are no DI stores in your area, we encourage you to find another organization with a similar mission that will accept your donation. 

What items can I donate to Deseret Industries?  

Deseret Industries accepts most items. Visit our Donate to Deseret Industries page to learn which items we cannot accept. 

What are Deseret Industries’ donation hours? 

Most Deseret Industries locations accept donations from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Mondays and from 9:00am to 7:00pm Tuesday through Saturday. However, donation hours vary by location. Please check your store location page for the most current hours.

What if I donate something by accident? 

If an item was donated by accident, please contact the store where it was dropped off as soon as possible. Items are typically processed within hours to a day and may be sold, recycled, sent to another DI location, or shipped for humanitarian purposes. As such, it is unlikely that an item donated by accident will be recovered. 

What does Deseret Industries do with items that they are unable to sell?

Items unable to be sold due to poor quality or not purchased in a certain amount of time will be sent through a recycling process. In 2023, DI recycled 75,878,213 pounds of goods. 

Excess donations are most often shipped to other DI stores that don’t receive enough donations. In some instances, they are also distributed to community partners or will be used for humanitarian purposes. 

Can I write off donations to Deseret Industries on my taxes?

All donations made to Deseret Industries are tax deductible. The associates who assist you at the drive-thru can provide you with a donation receipt.

 

Shopping

What are Deseret Industries’ store hours?  

Most Deseret Industries locations are open for retail from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Mondays and from 9:00am to 7:00pm Tuesday through Saturday. However, store hours vary by location and may fluctuate for various reasons, so please check your store location page for the most current hours.

What is the return policy at Deseret Industries? 

Deseret Industries will exchange clothing items within seven days of purchase when the original receipt is presented and the original price tags are attached. The exchange is honored at any Deseret Industries location and will be for equal in-store value to be used at the time of the exchange for other clothing items. There are no refunds or exchanges for non-clothing items.

New furniture and sleep products may be returned according to the Deseret Manufacturing warranty and return policies, which differ depending on the product. Information about these policies can be found on the webpage for each product or on the warranty card included with your item.

Does Deseret Industries offer discounts? 

Deseret Industries does not offer discounts for select groups, nor do we hold “discount days.” We want customers to shop at their convenience with the expectation that they can find the same good deal every day.  However, those who donate or make a purchase at Deseret Industries will receive a receipt that invites them to complete a survey for a discount on their next purchase. 

What kind of items can I buy at DI? 

As a thrift store, Deseret Industries has an ever-changing retail floor with thousands of quality items added daily, ranging from household goods to unique, one-of-a-kind treasures. There are eight main areas to explore:

DI also sells a limited selection of new furniture and sleep products, such as: 

  • Dressers 

  • Tables and chairs

  • Bed frames 

  • Mattresses 

These items are made at Deseret Manufacturing using solid wood and quality materials that ensure durability at a reasonable cost. 

How are prices determined at Deseret Industries? 

Each Deseret Industries location strives to keep its prices low and quality high. When donations are dropped off at DI, they are processed and priced using a good, better, best, exceptional model. Our associates process thousands of items a day and are learning new skills but do their best to price fairly. 

What is the pet policy at Deseret Industries? 

In accordance with guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are allowed in the store. However, pets and emotional support animals do not qualify as service animals under the ADA and are not allowed in the store. 

If you bring a service animal to the store, please ensure they are harnessed, leashed, or tethered if possible. 

Are weapons or firearms allowed inside Deseret Industries?  

Deseret Industries policy prohibits firearms, except in the case of authorized law enforcement officers. We respectfully request that customers—including those with concealed weapons permits—do not bring firearms or other weapons into Deseret Industries stores. 

How do I complete the customer feedback survey? 

You can provide us with feedback regarding your shopping or donating experience through our customer feedback survey. You will need to provide the survey ID found on your receipt. 

 

Employment and Volunteering

What jobs are available at Deseret Industries? 

We hire for the following positions: 

  • Full-time staff members, including operational supervisors, assistant store managers, and store managers

If you are interested in a staff position, search for available openings on the employment page for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 

Do I have to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to work as an associate at Deseret Industries? 

Part-time associates do not need to be members of the Church to be employed at DI. However, you will need a referral from a bishop of the Church. If you need help determining the bishop in your area, contact your local DI for help. 

What kind of support does Deseret Industries provide their associates? 

The Deseret Industries job training program provides individualized support based on each associate’s needs and interests. Throughout their experience at DI, associates will: 

  • Improve workplace behaviors in a safe environment. 

  • Develop and practice employable skills. 

  • Build confidence. 

  • Receive support and encouragement from staff. 

  • Connect one-on-one with a coach and a counselor. 

  • Learn job search skills. 

  • Have opportunities to pursue certifications and other training.

What is a business partnership? 

Local businesses can partner with Deseret Industries by providing an internship-type experience for a DI associate. This gives the associate a chance to work in his or her chosen career field and develop skills and confidence. DI pays the wages of the associate while they participate in the partnership.
