“I stay happy because I enjoy my job,” says Guadalupe, an associate at Deseret Industries. Guadalupe came to the United States from Mexico after her son moved here for college. When she got to the United States, she started taking English classes, and a friend who worked for DI encouraged Guadalupe to apply for a job there. Guadalupe started volunteering at DI and then became an associate, and she has loved it ever since. 

 

For Guadalupe, she loves the flexible hours and the people she works with, and she absolutely adores the customers. Sometimes she’ll brainstorm with them about how they could use different items in their home. “I enjoy my job a lot because I like helping the customers—I like helping people.” She also likes to keep busy in the store—her philosophy is if you think there’s nothing left to do, it’s because you’re not looking for something to do.

 

Not only has Guadalupe come to feel that DI is like family to her, but she’s also grateful for all the skills she’s learned as an associate. She feels much more adept at helping in other retail stores and she has really enjoyed the additional job training she’s receiving as she works toward becoming a nurse.
