How Nadine is Embracing Learning Opportunities at the Humanitarian Center

At the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center—an employment training facility in the Deseret Industries system—Nadine has found not only a job but also a community that supports her growth and educational goals.

As a mother of three, Nadine is grateful for the job training program that builds her skills and allows her to provide for her family. One of her favorite parts of her job is driving the forklift—a skill she acquired after becoming forklift certified through the Humanitarian Center training program.

Before coming to the United States, Nadine worked as a nurse in the Congo, helping to deliver babies. With the help of her development counselor at the Humanitarian Center, Nadine was able to build on her passion for healthcare by pursuing phlebotomy training.

“The Humanitarian Center gave me the opportunity to go to school,” Nadine shares. “I hope I can improve my English and go on to be a doctor.”

To further prepare for this goal, Nadine is an active participant in the English learning program at the Humanitarian Center, where she attends English classes that allow her to learn and practice the language for half of her paid working shift. As a team lead, she plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between employees, team members, staff, and supervisors.

“I help to translate things when others don’t speak English,” Nadine explains. “I focus on communication with my team because I am a leader.”

Nadine speaks highly of her supervisor, who has been instrumental in her development.

“My supervisor is a good man,” she says. “I like him because he makes things better for my life. He helps me to improve my English, to know my job, and to drive the forklift. He teaches me everything. Together with my English teacher, he is very important in my life.”

Nadine’s gratitude for this job training opportunity is evident in her words.

“I need to tell you about the Humanitarian Center,” she says. “It’s good, good, good, good. The culture everywhere is different, but the Humanitarian Center helps us to make a good life in America. They help to make a good job for our future. They help with everything—to speak English, to learn English, to drive the forklift, to lead. I’m very thankful.”

Through the opportunities provided by the Humanitarian Center, associates like Nadine are not only building better futures for themselves but are also contributing to the well-being of others.
