David is a friendly guy with a great sense of humor. After just a few minutes of conversation, he will probably have you laughing. David’s ability to connect with others has contributed to his positive work experience at Deseret Industries.
“I enjoy working with the people here,” David says. “Everyone is kind and considerate.”
David recently returned to the workforce after finding himself with an unexpected financial need. He knew that Deseret Industries was a place where he could offer his skills and contribute in a meaningful way. During his career, David worked in various roles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“I worked at the exhibits in the North and South Visitors Centers on Temple Square,” David says. “From there, I went to work in elevators and escalators.”
Through his work experience, David developed many strengths, including curiosity, kindness, and respect. He has built meaningful connections with his fellow DI associates by making a sincere effort to get to know them. For example, he uses his skills in American Sign Language to communicate with a deaf associate.
What truly stands out in his experience at DI is that his teammates have become friends. As a result, he feels supported in his role.
“People are great at looking for how they can help others,” David says. “If they notice that someone is falling behind, or needs support, they step in on their own.”
A contributing factor to this collaborative work environment is the DI job training program. Associates like David focus on developing important workplace behaviors including communication, reliability, and punctuality. This hands-on training prepares them for better employment.
Within the program, each associate is assigned to work under the direction of an operational supervisor, who functions as a job coach. Operational supervisors support associates in many ways, including teaching them job responsibilities and helping them set personal and professional goals.
“I enjoy working with my job coach,” David says. “We have a good relationship. He is great at leading by example.”
