DI Upcycled Cabinet

What is it about makeovers? I love a good makeover! This pink and purple beauty got an upcycle worthy of TV. And it was simple and quick.

I needed an outdoor cabinet to hold all my paint. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it since it would be exposed to the elements, but I don’t think you should have to sacrifice style for expense. My husband pointed out this cabinet to me while we were at Deseret Industries, and I knew it was perfect. It’s made of particle board, so it’s light and easy to move around, which is an added bonus.

I started by using my sander to get the bold colors off. Whoever painted the pink and purple on the cabinet knew what they were doing. They had great coverage and a nice finish. It was difficult to get the paint off, but I was impressed with their paint job. I kept hoping that mine would turn out as well as theirs did!

After I finished sanding the cabinet, I primed it with a light gray color. The gray was great because it didn’t require as many layers of paint to cover as white or black primer would have needed.

Then I got out my paint sprayer, which is magical. I have never painted something so large so quickly, and I rarely paint things this large. However, I will warn you that the sprayer is messy! I have no idea how to disassemble the sprayer for cleaning without getting paint all over your hands. Also, note that the sprayer needs to stay upright to function correctly, so I had to prop up the cabinet doors and drawers to get an even coat.

I also created the cabinet pulls myself. When I started making over this cabinet, I realized I didn’t want to just paint it and call it good. I knew I needed to do a little something more to make me feel like the cabinet got a full makeover. These little cabinet pulls were easy, and I only needed a jigsaw and a drill. (See a full tutorial on making cabinet pulls here.)

The rest of the hardware pieces I used were the original hardware, and I just spray painted them a flat black.

Check out your local Deseret Industries or other thrift store and see for yourself if you can find something that needs a little makeover.
