I moved to the United States with my wife and daughter from Fiji. Because I spoke very little English, I struggled to find a job in my field. My bishop referred me to Deseret Industries. I began by participating in the Career Workshop through LDS Employment Resource Services, then I started at DI a week later.
While at Deseret Industries, I worked with my job coach trainer and development counselor to improve my work skills. I began by working on the docks processing donations that came in our large donation trucks and then helped to maintain inventory for the sales floor. I learned how to drive a forklift and an electric pallet jack, and was certified in customer service. Throughout this time, I was also working to improve my English, improve my computer skills, and obtain a driver’s license.
After my English and computer skills had improved, I was referred to the Accelerated Job Search (AJS) Program, where I was given the opportunity to spend my day searching for a job while still earning a paycheck. During my third week in AJS I found a job with an airline. I am still receiving phone calls from applications that I turned in during the time I spent in AJS.
Deseret Industries changed my life! I am now able to provide a stable living, with medical and dental insurance, for my wife and daughter. Heavenly Father blessed me with this wonderful opportunity. I am so thankful for the Church’s program.
