I had just recovered from back surgery when I enrolled in the Desert Industries training program. Having been on disability for two years, I wanted to fill my time with something productive. I was concerned about returning to work because I didn’t know how long I could be on my feet working or what my limitations might be. My supervisor and co-workers were very understanding and patient as I adjusted to the working world again.
I knew it would be a challenge after being out of work for so long and having been through a series of back surgeries, but the staff at DI genuinely cared about me and my future. They helped me to find a career path that I could physically perform, and helped me to be excited about work. I was able to find something I could do and something I would love. The DI helped pay for the training I needed to become a bus driver. My job coach and counselor helped me set clear expectations and encouraged me as I learned the skills I needed for a new future.
At this point I am happier, more positive, and have learned how to work better with others. I am now able to relax and appreciate the little things in life. Through this experience I have learned my limitations and my strengths, and have gained more confidence in myself. I have truly been blessed through my opportunity to train at DI and am thankful for the program and new life-long friends who have helped me along the way.
“Through this experience I have learned my limitations and my strengths, and have gained more confidence in myself.”
