How One Deseret Industries Volunteer Became an Associate

Like many, Kevin struggled with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having recently moved to the United States from his native country of Tawain, he was not yet acclimated to the new culture and environment.

To help him navigate his situation, Kevin relied on members of his church congregation for support. But in 2022, he decided to take steps to improve his situation.

“I changed a lot," Kevin recalls. “I didn’t want to rely on someone else.”

Over the next few years, Kevin took English language courses, completed his GED, and learned more about American culture. He also began volunteering at Deseret Industries.

“I wanted to contribute,” Kevin says. “I volunteered for two or three months, and they said, ‘Hey, why don’t you just work here?’”

With a work visa, Kevin was ultimately hired as a DI associate. It was his first job in the United States, following his time working as a trader in Tawain. Although he was initially worried about starting a new job, Kevin has learned to utilize his strengths and is developing important workplace skills through the DI job training program

“I have more confidence,” Kevin says. “I don’t want to make any mistakes. I try to work hard even though it’s a different type of job.”

Kevin is now applying for other jobs at local businesses, where he hopes to use the skills he has learned to make a difference. His favorite part about working at Deseret Industries is the opportunity to be an effective employee.

“I want to teach people or contribute in some other way,” Kevin says of his goals. “At Deseret Industries, I make a contribution.”
