Watch out, Clark Kent—there’s a new Superman in town. His name is Larry, and he works at Deseret Industries.
“I’m a big guy, so I always get to do the ‘Superman jobs’ that nobody else wants to do,” Larry says. “I don't know if I'm an inspiration to anybody, but my team knows they can rely on me.”
Larry’s story is one of resilience and strength. He even showed up for his shift one day after being hit by a car while walking to work.
“I managed to get up, and I walked about five or six blocks to DI,” Larry recalls.
When he arrived at the store, Larry and his supervisor determined that he should seek immediate medical attention for his leg. The fracture ultimately required him to stay off his feet for three weeks, but Larry consistently shows superhuman effort through his work ethic and dedication.
“I’ve always been a good worker,” Larry says. “I keep busy and keep everything in order.”
Larry began working at DI about a year ago and brought many skills gained from previous jobs.
“I have about 45 years of work behind me,” Larry says. “I’ve done all kinds of work—factories, military, construction—so I know what needs to be done. I’m always reliable, I come to work on time, I’m a team player, and I know what needs to be done,” Larry emphasizes.
Now, Larry is utilizing the DI job training program to refine his skills. The job training program uses a well-researched framework to help associates learn skills such as teamwork, professionalism, and productivity.
“DI is good work,” Larry says. “It’s a positive environment. They have behavioral guidelines, and they teach people social skills.”
In his year as a DI associate, Larry has regularly looked for ways to contribute.
“I work in the sorting area, but I’m a floater—I work all around,” Larry says. “If there aren’t books to be sorted, I look for other things that need to be done. I’ll take out the trash, I’ll move stuff, I’ll put things on the shelves, I’ll price shoes. I just try to help everybody out.”
