In 2018, Bryan was in a motorcycle accident that left him with a severe brain injury. But this is not the end of his story. Bryan is starting a new chapter at Deseret Industries, where he is learning new skills and gaining confidence in himself as a person and as an employee.
“Every day, thinking is hard for me,” Bryan says. “But at the end of the day, I survived. For whatever reason, God has another plan for me. I am just trying to figure it out.”
Bryan is one of the many associates in the DI job training program who have found hope amidst their challenges. DI's mission is to help those enrolled in the program improve their lives through work, training, and education. The program facilitates the growth of about 10,000 associates each year.
“I have gained a lot of skills that I didn’t realize I would have to learn,” Bryan says. “For example, now I can size clothing. I work well in the process and have discovered more about how I learn.”
While in the program, associates receive training and coaching that helps them gain valuable work experience, apply essential skills, and learn to become more self-reliant.
“The job coaching has been phenomenal,” Bryan says. “The DI job coaches have lifted me up as a person to help me reach my goals and have been accommodating in helping me with my work.”
As Bryan has worked hard and applied new skills, he has increased his confidence.
“One of my biggest struggles is my physical limitations, but also the mental aspect,” Bryan says. “I like that I now have the confidence to talk to people. I have been able to gain a lot of confidence by sharing my story.”
When asked what he loves most about his job, Bryan highlights the opportunity he has had to build relationships.
“I have really enjoyed talking to and meeting new people,” Bryan says. “I have been able to work in a couple of different assignments. Each time that I go to a different team, I get to meet a whole bunch of new people. That has been the best part.”
Bryan is a great example of how the work environment at Deseret Industries not only builds associates' skill sets but also builds their confidence. Now, Bryan is using his strengths to reach goals outside the workplace as well.
“I just met one of my big goals,” Bryan says. “With the help of the counselors here at DI, I was able to get all the things together that I needed to get into an apartment. I signed the lease yesterday.”
