DI associate Maria is interested in several possible career paths, including graphic design, coding, and cosmetology. Her experience at DI has prepared her for future job opportunities in many ways, such as enabling her to learn punctuality, attendance, and social skills.
“I used to be very afraid of being around a lot of people,” Maria says. “But since I work in the collectibles area, I have to help customers sometimes, and that helps me speak to other people and be more confident.”
Maria came to the United States from her native country of Mexico for opportunities in education and employment. When she learned from some friends that DI would help in her pursuit to obtain her GED, Maria saw it as a match made in heaven. She was also surprised to learn that DI would help her enroll in and pay for English classes.
“It makes me want to be here because I can have a lot of help that I really need,” she says.
In addition to these resources, Maria has found the development counselors to be a great support.
“They are people that you can trust and talk to about your goals,” Maria says. “And not just your goals—sometimes it’s about your life, and what you want to do with it, and how they can help you get through a lot of things.”
Her experience has led her to encourage other associates to reach out to the development counselors when they are struggling with emotional challenges or need someone to talk to. When asked how she supports her job coach, Maria highlights her efforts to be a team player.
"Being a good employee, following his rules and also the policy,” she says.
