Learning and Leading: Fiso’s Experience at Deseret Industries

When Fiso joined Deseret Industries two years ago, he saw the job as a chance for growth and improvement. By fully embracing the opportunity, Fiso has developed his skills and become an effective leader.

“I have worked in different areas of the store, and that has helped me learn,” Fiso says. “I help with cashiering, sorting clothes, serving customers, and working at the dock.”

Fiso is one of thousands of associates who are part of the DI job training program. What sets Deseret Industries apart from other thrift stores is the opportunity it provides for associates to learn valuable job skills while earning a living.

Within the job training program, each associate is supported by an operational supervisor who functions as a job coach. Through coaching, goal setting, and skill-building, associates are better prepared to obtain and retain better employment after they leave DI.

Fiso credits his job coach for pushing him to learn and for giving him the opportunity to become a team lead at the dock. This position has not only helped him recognize his growth but has also shown him how he can better support his team.

“I like being a team lead because I get to help and teach my coworkers,” Fiso says. “I have learned to be patient and supportive.”

With refined skills and leadership experience, Fiso is better prepared for a brighter future. He has worked with Employment Center Advisors at Employment Services—a free resource available to everyone—to get help applying for other jobs.

As Fiso looks for new opportunities to showcase his skills, he continues to learn and lead in his role at Deseret Industries.

“I have learned to work well with my team,” Fiso says. “We all work hard.”
