I have Asperger’s syndrome, a high functioning form of autism spectrum disorder. Because of my Asperger’s, I am very shy and have a difficult time talking with people. I was having trouble finding a job, so I visited with my bishop. He referred me to Deseret Industries.
My experience at Deseret Industries has helped me a lot to develop my job skills and communication skills. I began at DI working on the dock, where I learned how to greet the customers who were donating items and who were picking up items they had purchased. Eventually, I was moved to the sales floor and became a cashier. This helped me a lot to develop my customer service skills.
Deseret Industries also taught me how to present myself with confidence to new employers. In the training, I learned about job interviews and practiced my “Me in 30 Seconds” skills.
During my time at DI, I had four great job coaches to help me achieve my goals. My co-workers and leads were also a big help. I still have problems multi-tasking and keeping up with multiple responsibilities, but I feel I am on the right track now.
I am grateful for all of the help I have received at DI. The skills I have learned are those that will help me succeed in life.
“My experience at Deseret Industries has helped me a lot to develop my job skills and communication skills.”
