I have schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is hard for me to find employment that will accommodate my disabilities. Deseret Industries (DI) was willing to give me a chance. They made accommodations for me by letting me work in the parking lot where there were no loud noises, few distractions, and little fear of germs.
Working at DI was a great confidence booster. The staff gave me the support I needed, and I gained the self-assurance I lacked to take a step up to a new job. I landed a part-time janitorial job that fits my needs and can accommodate my disabilities. My new job involves working by myself a few hours at night. A supervisor gives me assignments that I do well and checks in with me as needed.
It feels wonderful to be self-sufficient and have meaningful employment.
