I first volunteered at Deseret Industries prior to joining the program. When I wanted to expand my career options, I was offered an opportunity to work at DI on the dock and in production. This opportunity allowed me to obtain needed skills, in particular recertification for operating fork lifts. I also learned about safety regulations as a key member of the safety committee and I practiced management skills through leading and training others on the dock.
Deseret Industries provided me with people who supported me as I worked towards my goals. My mentor was a huge support. For several months, I dealt with many family struggles, but my mentor kept me on track. We had a strong relationship which allowed me to talk openly about the barriers I faced. My job coaches helped me improve my customer service skills. I had never dealt with customers before, so with their help I improved. My development specialist helped me with my goal to achieve a GED. The service missionaries were also a big part of my personal progress toward employment. They gave me ideas on how to approach goals and then they pointed me in the right direction and encouraged me to move forward.
Since starting at Deseret Industries, I have gained so much experience and have had the opportunity to share what I have learned with others. As a lead, I have been able to help other associates. I am grateful for the program because it has helped me get to a place both professionally and at home where I can better my life. My family has supported me through the program and I am grateful that I can now better support my family.
