I was accepted into a rehabilitation program that works to improve the outcomes of those like me who are serving time for addiction-related offenses. When released, I needed a job where I would have the flexibility to attend court directed meetings and therapy. My stake president at the jail knew I needed more than just a job. What I needed was a positive environment with people willing to help me get back on my feet. A referral to Deseret Industries made this possible.
At DI, I had great job coaches and a development specialist. With their help, I set goals and improved my work skills and performance. I wanted to pursue a career in heavy duty diesel and was enrolled at a local technical school. Those at DI were there to encourage me and willing to help with my crazy schedule.
While at DI, I worked in many different departments. I was most accomplished in the electronics department. While there, I increased productivity and sales by 30% in one month, which was a record high.
Today I am a completely different person. I am clean and sober. I have good friends and a great support group. I have progressed in all of my court-ordered classes and am completing my course in diesel mechanics. While I am finishing my schooling, I have been offered a position as a diesel technician with a good company.
My stake president was right—I found the help I needed at Deseret Industries. I feel very blessed and greatly appreciate everything the DI and the Church has done for me. This program has changed my life.
