When I was young, I suffered a serious head injury in an accident. That injury led to only partial use of the muscles on my right side, including my arm. Although my life has not been easy, I have always worked hard. I struggled in school, but managed to graduate from high school. Once out of school I went to work on my grandfather’s farm. I then worked in the grocery business for over 16 years. When I had to leave for surgeries on my shoulder, I had to find a way to once again enter the workforce. At that time I found work through an organization that helps those with disabilities to function independently. When I left to help my family in another state, I lost that opportunity. When I returned, I was unsure what I was going to do. That is when my bishop referred me to the Deseret Industries training program.
I truly feel that all the help I have had has made my life more enjoyable and complete. At Deseret Industries I found the support I needed to return my independence. A caring staff at DI were there to support and encourage me as I learned valuable skills and sought for new employment. I am now enjoying the satisfaction that comes from working successfully in my new job.
