Finding permanent employment was a struggle because I lacked both marketable skills and experience. After discussing my situation with a counselor at LDS Employment Resource Services, we determined that the Deseret Industries training program would be a wonderful opportunity for me to pursue. The job coaches and other staff could help me create a career plan and would be there to encourage me to keep to my plan. With a referral from my bishop, I became an associate at DI.
The staff at DI was great. Not only did they help me choose a career goal that I felt good about, but they helped me obtain the skills I needed. Initially, the experience of working with other associates from so many backgrounds was difficult and I struggled. In time, and with some coaching, I was able to adapt and work effectively with many different personalities. What helped me the most was their continued encouragement to keep me on task.
My life is definitely different today. I am no longer in survival mode. I feel productive and accomplished. With help from DI, I am training to become a certified nursing assistant and am excited to move into my future job. I know I can succeed if I take care of myself and think positively. Through this experience I have had a lot of help from my parents, my job coach, and the staff at DI. I am thankful for all they have done to bring me to a new future.
