I had been serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the past two years, but now I needed a way to use my energy and abilities in the world of work. My bishop referred me to the Deseret Industries training program, where I had the opportunity of joining a powerful team of associates and staff at the Humanitarian Center.
At the Humanitarian Center, supplies are prepared for emergency response and humanitarian initiatives worldwide. Associates with very diverse backgrounds are enrolled at the center. Many associates are refugees who have come to the United States and need help to learn English. Others are just like me, wanting to serve others as we work to develop job skills and acquire valuable experience.
What is special about working at the Humanitarian Center is how we begin each work day with prayer. Knowing our work is dedicated to the service of others creates an environment that is filled with kindness and goodwill.
I learned so much from working at the Humanitarian Center. My training included receiving forklift certification, warehouse operation skills, and procedures for unloading and loading trucks. I also improved my social skills from my interaction with this very diverse group of co-workers. Through it all, my job coach was there to encourage me and help me determine my goals and accomplish them. I could not have progressed so far without her.
I am very grateful for the work experience I received at the Humanitarian Center. I am now bolder and excited to make life changing decisions. And, I have accepted a great new job!
