I had been working at various lumber yards for years and it took a toll on me physically, leaving me with a bad back. Because I didn't have training in any other field, I was unable to find suitable work for some time. I lacked communication skills and needed to build my confidence. I also needed something interesting that would motivate me to want to be productive and succeed. I was led to Deseret Industries.
With the help of my family, my job coaches, and my friends at DI, I learned to recognize what I needed to do to be successful and was pushed to better myself every week. I was taught the skills I needed and was moved out of my comfort zone. Soon, my confidence grew and I realized my own worth. I was then able to focus more on others, and I tried to help at least one person each day at work. Eventually, I had the confidence to become a leader and I gained the respect of my team.
My job coaches at DI helped me investigate possible careers and available training. This motivated me to go to school to be certified in phlebotomy. In the future, I would like to further my education in the medical field. As my time at the DI comes to an end, I hope to take advantage of a business partnership as I search for a job.
When I started at Deseret Industries, my life wasn’t going anywhere. I now have the skills and confidence I lacked. I am grateful for the self-assurance and leadership skills I have acquired and for the lasting friendships I have been able to cultivate. One day, I hope to use what I have learned at DI to help others.
