For fifteen years, I had a good job working as a computer drafter at an engineering firm. Then, for the better part of two years, I was unemployed. The economy had taken a turn, and I had lost my job due to company layoffs. Occasionally, I would work a side job, but the work was temporary and failed to meet the financial needs of my family. Our medical bills were rising and I began to feel desperate. In meeting with my bishop, I was referred to the Deseret Industries training program.
I went to DI to explore new career options in retail, the culinary arts, or several other career paths. I wanted to avoid returning to computer drafting. I had lost hope in finding a position in my former field, and I had lost confidence in myself.
After several months of intensive efforts through job coaching, work adjustment counseling, and participation in the Associate Placement Program, I regained the confidence I lacked. I once again found work as a computer drafter. It was an entry level position, but one with pay close to the same level as the job I had lost.
I am optimistic about my future and feel a deep gratitude for the services I received from Deseret Industries. Deseret Industries is an inspired program.
