I have a lace garland that I hang in my home as a decoration for most holidays, and a lot of people are stunned to learn that I made it from old curtains that I bought at a thrift store. Then they jokingly ask if they can buy it from me. I always smile and respond, “No, but I can tell you how to make one!”
So here is a tutorial on how to make your own lace garland. And the best thing about it is that it’s super easy!
You will need to buy two things: old lace curtains or lace tablecloths from a thrift store and a 15-foot rope from a hardware store. The rope should be about as thick as your pinkie finger. Once you’ve gathered the items, start by washing the lace in your washing machine and cutting it into strips that are about 8–10 inches long and 2–3 inches thick. I would suggest using a rotary blade and mat to do this.
After that, all you need to do is turn on a movie and sit and tie knots! You will tie the lace strips over the rope using square knots. If you tie the lace left over right and then right over left, your knots will be neat and tight. After you tie each strip, slide the knots close together.
Repeat that process over and over again until you have a beautiful lace garland that you can use to decorate your home. I use this garland as décor in different parts of my home almost all year long, and I add things to it depending on the season. For example, I added some black feather boas and gold tinsel to it for Halloween. For Christmas, I added a string of ornaments.
You can get really creative and have a lot of fun with a lace garland like this. The options for what you can do with it are limitless. It’s a simple and beautiful project that can add a lot to your home.
