I have a new job as a train host, making sure that the passenger’s trips are safe and sometimes fun. I work all hours, seeing the rising of the moon and the setting of the sun. Every day is filled with new faces and smiles. I never thought I could walk the many miles I walk each day, but thanks to my time at the Deseret Industries, I got my health under control and gained the self-confidence I needed to succeed in this demanding and important position.
Deseret Industries helped me to strengthen my weaknesses and find the spirit in my heart. I’d like to thank the managers and supervisors at the DI for all the support they gave me while I was working there. When I first started, I was lost. I needed somewhere to go, physically and spiritually. They understood about my medical appointments and were patient as I learned to manage my medications. My job coaches and the department leads were there for me.
While I was training at Deseret Industries, I did many different jobs. I was a cashier, worked on the sales floor, and even helped to process collectibles. I attended workshops where I learned how to create a resume and how to present myself in an interview. Working there gave me back my self-confidence and my desire to work. From this experience, I discovered in my heart that being around the public was where I was most comfortable.
My new position requires that I deal with the public in a close-knit area. I am responsible for their safety and I assist the handicapped passengers. I really enjoy the position. When I look back, I know it was the Spirit who steered me in this direction. I will be forever grateful for the work experience and for the friendships I made while training at Deseret Industries. Thank you!
