I needed a job, but finding one was a challenge because I had very little formal work experience. When I spoke with my bishop about my situation, he advised me to join the Deseret Industries (DI) training program. There I would have the opportunity to not only receive on-the-job training, but if I proved myself, I could also receive the support I needed for additional technical training. What I really wanted was a career where I would be helping others.
While training at DI, I met with a development counselor, and I began to set goals toward a vocational plan that included training to become a certified nursing assistant. This was just right for me because I could find a position in an environment I loved, while working toward the ultimate goal of graduating as a registered nurse.
I worked hard at DI, learning new job skills and improving my interpersonal skills. Perhaps the greatest skill I learned at DI was being able to communicate with people from many different backgrounds and attitudes, something that is so vital to quality nursing care.
When I completed my coursework and passed the state CNA licensing exam, I was hired at a rehabilitation center full-time. I love my new job and they love me. I am so excited to move forward in my new career.
