The idea for me to participate in the Deseret Industries training program began with my mother. Being the wonderful person that she is, she volunteered at our local DI. This experience gave her the idea that I should try to get a job there. Honestly, I was a little hesitant, but decided to give it a try anyway.
When I first started at Deseret Industries, I hadn’t completed my high school diploma. I had been home schooled and didn’t have anywhere near enough credits to graduate with my class. I needed an alternative option. Deseret Industries was able to help me pay for taking the GED test, so that all I needed to do was supply my motivation. Soon I found out that I had passed with flying colors. It felt great to get something this big accomplished in my life. I have since applied to the university and have been accepted.
Deseret Industries even helped me get my driver’s license. This was incredible. Even though I wasn't able to get it until I was almost nineteen, it has been worth the wait. I also saved enough money to buy a car.
With all of the guidance and support from the Deseret Industries, I have learned so much. I have gained confidence and discovered strengths. I have learned that everyone makes mistakes, and when we do, we just start again. I have learned that I can only do what I can do, and that if I just try my best, things will turn out ok in the end. DI has been a life saver for me.
Looking back, I truly believe that when my mother encouraged me to get a job at Deseret Industries, she could see the good that it would bring to my life. Because I was willing to rely on her good advice, I was able to get many things accomplished. I am now able to make my life a little more successful. The Deseret Industries staff, the job coach trainer, the development specialist, my bishops, my mentor, and my mother—they believed in me when I didn’t belief in myself. Knowing that I have worth is one of the best feelings in this world.
“Knowing that I have worth has got to be one of the best feelings in this world.”
