I have a bachelor’s degree in art with a minor in English. Because of my talents and interests in art and written communication, I really wanted to find a job at a museum or a position with a marketing agency. Finding entry level work was difficult without current work experience. My bishop suggested I enroll in the training program at Deseret Industries where I could utilize the different programs and resources offered by DI and the LDS Employment Resource Center.
Because I lived more than forty miles away from the nearest DI, I wanted to relocate to a closer city and live on my own; something I had not done since college. My family and bishop wholeheartedly supported this move, and I was excited to have a new beginning.
I started training in the small as-is production department, working in a warehouse environment. The people on my team were so diverse in both work ability and attitude. This was tough for me. I am used to working alone or having a team that is always on the ball. I learned that DI is unique, because everyone here is at a different phase for developing work skills. Through the help of my trusting and supportive job coach, I was able to learn how to manage my frustrations and appreciate the differences in my coworkers. I learned that my own energy and attitude affect the team as a whole, and that we are most productive when we are all positive.
When I was ready to look for work, my development specialist informed me that she had received a call from an accountant who was looking to hire a personal assistant to help with their online marketing and newsletter. I interviewed with the owner of the accounting firm and a business partnership was arranged. After two months, I was offered full-time employment.
In my new position, I am now able to utilize my creative skills as I maintain the company newsletter and website. I enjoy watching the firm grow as I assist our owner to reach and establish new clients. I am grateful for the business partnership that allowed me to showcase the skills I refined through the Deseret Industries program.
